From John Oliver

There are some spaces left on the OHA Annual Outing.
The trip is on Saturday 15th of August. Cost £45 which includes a coach trip with Crosskeys Coaches to The Olympic Park where we pick up a Blue Badge Guide from City and Village Tours who will take us around the park taking in the iconic venues. We then rejoin the coach at The Westfield Shopping centre for a ride through Epping Forest and up the Lee Valley where we board a wide beamed barge for a 90 minute cruise during which a cream team will be served at tables and chairs.

If there is sufficient interest some can enjoy a cable car ride over The Thames on the way back which will be extra but the cost is not known until I am aware of numbers.

This is all for the benefit of the OHA and therefore the School. John has been arranging highly successful Outings for many years. Please support this if you can. For more info contact John Oliver

Library Book Appeal

(The former students’ association of The Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone)

President: John Batten

The Old Harveians Association is committed to supporting to the School in every way possible. In recent years, the generosity of members has enabled us to purchase a new minibus, upgrade stage lighting and sound equipment, send a whole year group of boys to the battlefields of the Somme to commemorate the centenary of World War 1, and establish a fund to support boys whose backgrounds would otherwise hinder their opportunities.

The School is very fortunate to still have a library at its core, and we wish to enhance the enjoyment that pupils receive from reading by substantially adding to the range of fiction books that they can borrow.

We are therefore appealing to Old Harveians to consider sponsoring the books listed below. All are priced at £8 each, and members are welcome to sponsor one or more of their choice.  We will insert a commemorative sticker in each book to acknowledge the sponsor.

If you feel able to support the School in this way, please complete the form below, indicating which book(s) you wish to sponsor, and send it, with a cheque made payable to OHA, to: Old Harveians Association, The Harvey Grammar School, Cheriton Road, Folkestone, CT19 5JY.

Old Harveians social London May 13

A reminder that the next social event for old Harveians is just two weeks away. The much requested ‘beer in London’ is 13 May. Venue, recommended by an old boy, is
Via Fossa, VIA Canary Wharf
2 The Port East Building

Weds. 13 May from 5pm until the last person leaves. Hopefully it will be a warm, pleasant evening and we can get a table or two outside in the fresh air. Usual informal format. No booking. Just turn up, enjoy a beer or two, meet old friends, make new friends, chat, laugh and reminisce, network and make new contacts. Ed Argar – an old Harveian MP?

Campaigning for the General Election is under way and will no doubt bore most of us to death over the next few weeks. However an old Harveian is one the candidates. Ed Argar (HGS 1989-96) is the Conservative candidate for Charnwood in Leicestershire which is currently held by retiring Tory Stephen Dorrell. With a majority of 15000 to defend there is a very good chance of an old Harveian MP come May.

70 years after Merthyr…

The Snowdown Colliery Welfare Male Voice Choir will be presenting a concert  at Harvey Grammar School at 7.30pm on Saturday 14th of March on behalf of The Old Harveians Association to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the return of the School from evacuation  to Merthy Tydfil so what better way to celebrate than to have a Welsh Male Voice Choir singing for us.

Tickets are £10 and are available from me by e mailing to or phoning 01303 251403 or e mail to The School to or phoning 252131

From Phil Harding…

Old Harveians

Charlie Hemphrey

Following in the footsteps of Les Ames and Tim Wren, Charlie Hemphrey (2000-7) has become the third Old Harveian to play First-class cricket (I am not aware of any others?).
He made his debut for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield game against Victoria last week. Here is the scorecard:
As you can see, a winning start by an innings and plenty, but Charlie was out second ball!
Charlie was a member of the Kent Cricket Academy during his time at Harvey, but despite featuring in quite a number of Kent 2nd XI matches never broke through into the first team.
He was a member of our touring group to Barbados in 2006. See attached photo – enjoying the local wildlife!
Another Old Harveians in Brisbane is Jamie Pybus (1992-99), who is Director of Football at St Joseph’s Nudgee College, an independent catholic school in the city.
Best regards
