From Phil Harding

Our tribute to Philip Burgess at the OHA Dinner has been generating some interest on the Dambusters Blog on the internet.

I received the attached from someone who lives close to the crash site in Germany and who is involved in the plans to erect a memorial there next year.

Philip Burgess plane crash report

RIP Dave Richardson HGS 1967-74

Although Dave and I were at the Harvey at the same time for five years we had no recollection of our paths crossing there. It was through the Harvey group on Facebook that we first got in touch back in 2010. Our FB chats became more regular in 2013 exchanging notes on our sons, his eldest David and my youngest Mat, and their applications for University. Just two proud Dads discussing which Unis, why, what courses, student loans, accommodation, etc. etc. We met on only two occasions. The first in summer 2013 when I stopped for a coffee with him near his home in Ipswich. The second when he joined myself and other Harvey old boys for a beer in London this May.

Other than this I know little about Dave. When he left the Harvey he went on to the University of Bath and a career largely in IT. He lost his wife to cancer but had found a new happiness with Sarah. He was very proud of his sons and was looking forward to his younger son Steve also going to University soon. He was in good spirits when we met in May but a couple of weeks later he was diagnosed with cancer of the throat. He was very positive and met the challenge with great courage, posting a regular Sit Rep (situation report) on his Facebook page. He nicknamed his cancer ‘Bert’ and some weeks he would be beating Bert, and other times Bert would be having the upper hand. In late October came the Sit Rep no-one wanted to see. He announced that ‘Bert had won’. On 29 October David, Steve and Sarah posted the ‘In Memoriam’ on Facebook. The funeral is at Ipswich Crematorium 1145hrs 24 October.

RIP Dave

Numbers are building steadily before the traditional last minute rush of bookings. Final booking date is 30 Nov. which is just 4 weeks away. Last year the Dinner sold out. For the 1964 and 1989 groups, remember this is your 50th and 25th anniversaries of joining the school. A great occasion for a reunion, or another one in the case of the ’64 group. Those who left in 2011 an opportunity to meet old friends again after university? The Dinner is open to all old Harveians.

Phil expects more current and former staff to be attending. Former staff who regularly attend include Geoff Cooke, Johnny Herbert, Audrey Wind and John Edwards. For those who joined the school in 1964 and 1989 it will be your 50th and 25th anniversaries respectively. How about getting your peers together for a reunion? Those who left in 2011, many of you will have finished Uni or other training so again how about a reunion? On a personal note, it is the 45th anniversary of the 1969 intake joining the school. And better still from the schools perspective, it is 40 years since many of us left! So how about getting together again Jon Wilson-Read, Rob Fulford, Kevan Allaway, Gordon Jinks, Ian Brooker and many others?

A-levels: Harvey Grammar’s ‘fantastic’ results

The Harvey Grammar is celebrating another good year.

Head teacher Scott Norman said: “We’ve done fantastically. We’re up by two per cent on last year – we achieved 63.4 per cent A* to B. In my first year, I’m very pleased with that. What’s nice is that they have done really well and are going to really good universities and that’s the main thing.”

Felix Ling, pictured, achieved two As, in economics and general studies, and two A*s, in government and politics and history. He’s off to Warwick University.

He said: “I’m looking forward to it – it should be good. It’s been pretty stressful and pretty work-heavy but it’s been good.”

Pop star at the Harvey…

POP sensation Pixie Lott wowed pupils at the Harvey Grammar School with an exclusive performance this morning.

The 23-year-old star sung three acoustic numbers in front of the lower school during assembly, before talking to sixth formers and aspiring music students.

Lott, who has topped the charts with songs such as All About Tonight, was at the school to promote the work of charity Cardiac Risk in the Young and said it was the first visit to Folkestone.

She said: “It’s great to be here. Everyone has been really friendly and accommodating, and it’s really good to spread the word of CRY.”
